Waterproof/windproof cycling jacket recommendation

Hiya lady’s and gents

Can you recommend a decent waterproof jacket that doesn’t make you sweat out and basically breaths while you cycle.

Thank you in advance

If you want properly waterproof then a Shakedry is what you want. Gore make them but plenty of other brands also use the fabric.

For 95% of riding however, you're better off with a soft shell type jacket that will keep showers off and be more comfortable and breathable. Something like the Castelli Alpha Light jacket or a Perfetto.

I have the Rapha Rain jacket and it's pretty good. Bought it years ago in a sale, but not sure I'd paid full price.

The Castelli Gabba jerseys are also great in light rain. You'll get a bit wet still, but stay warm.

  • As usual there's absolutely no detail in the question, so how do you expect a reasoned answer?
What style of riding? Are you a hard-charger or a Sunday pootler? Will you ride in all weather conditions, or is it a mere fantasy, dictated by the weather forecast.
For the effort you've put in I'd recommend a bin bag. Hits the criteria!

  • The forum is full of questions from well meaning posters that waste so much time and energy by not having a basic format to what they are asking. Not ranting at the OP specifically, but you get dozens of these questions every week. It's a ball-ache.

If you want a reasoned answer, ask a reasoned question.
It really isn't that difficult, is it?

Reported this. Totally not needed. You clearly have nothing better to do than troll peoples posts. You’re meant to be a fellow cyclist. Shame on you.

    Ooh, harsh.
    But true.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

A one sentence question doesn't merit a reasonable reply.
Getover yourself and put a bit more thought into your question.
The biggest probem these days is that too many cyclists think everything is about them not the whole community. If you want to take part give a bit more than you given so far.

Grow up? I think you really need to take a look at yourself my friend. Yes I’ve probably not made my question clear and put enough detail in. But dose it require you to basically insult me with your harsh words. No need to reply as I’m shutting my account down. I can’t be a member of a forum where at any point I get someone attack me for not writing or asking correct questions. I have better things to do than hang around waiting to be bullied. Well I hope you got what you wanted out of this. You can sit back and enjoy your day knowing you’ve got rid of someone that can’t ask questions correctly. Well done you big man.

    What a load of rubbish.

It doesn't matter if he has posted 10 times or 10,000 times.

A one sentence question is fine.

Heaven's above man, you're not wonderful if you've posted 682 times like you - going by your logic the rest of us wouldn't bother talking to you because you're 18,000 below the rest of us.

This is a forum for everyone. Let the man post and ask his question without some pseudo snob thinking he's better.

We are still none the wiser for requirements or budget.
CB may need some lessons in diplomacy but his point was spot on.

'Tis the season to be jolly
Fa la la la la, la la la la...

Budget brand, good enough if you are a hobby and relaxed cyclist like me, Altura. Check out the Tredz etc websites for price comparisons.

Yup - Altura are as good as anything tbh.

MF is a Perfetto/Gabba kinda guy, gilet on top, soft shell Assos thing if cold cold cold but dry.

He’s also blimmin’ impressed at how that Proviz stuff reflects light but isn’t too sure how good they are at that wicking stuff.

You're a hard core cyclocommuter Oxo, me I'm a hobby rider. I avoid the rainy days unless absolutely necessary, like last Wednesday's last chance for who knows how long meet at the pub. Past couple of months I've been using the merino base layer, with a thin wooly long sleeve over then the Altura wind jacket. Been working fine, no big sweaty dampness, and happy warm at 1c on Christmas day ride.

Guess we all find out the options that work best for us. Which is not a lot of help for the OP, if s/he is still here...

Right, need to get act together and get out in the sunshine, 3 hours of daylight left.

I was going to start a similar thread of my own on this but since it's already begun...

At some point last year, I bought a cycling top from Aldi that I really like, but it's black, which isn't great on my commute home. It's the usual lycra/elastic mix, but the inside has these sort of... fuzzy dots and it seems warmer because of it, and the thickness of the material.

However I have no idea what this type of arrangement is called so I can search for it online, and I can never find it in shops. Obviously Aldi doesn't keep a regular stock of this kind of thing.

I asked in a FB group I'm in and someone suggested it was a similar thing to what Rab do, but they're extremely expensive.

Photo attached - any ideas for potential alternatives?

Castelli perfetto ros, will keep you both warm and dryish, a bit expensive but worth the money

Proviz stuff is like wearing a lighthouse, sadly its breathability is pants. I got a gilet and i can only wear it in minus temperatures. For cold and damp all day stuff I've got a decathlon softshell circa 6 or so years old and its bombproof, more recently I've picked a funkier attack waterproof up for slightly warmer times. I've also got a altura and montane boil in the bag type jackets for emergency summer use. Tried gabba and gore amongst others and didn't like the fit / or they didn't like me. I also had either a lidl or aldi jacket brought me by the OH but that was like wearing a builders bag.

One is upset to read that - was tempted to give the Proviz stuff a go but not if its like riding in a bin bag.

Perfect for winter urban communting maybe?

One must also sing tge praises of the Funkier stuff - one does possess warmers for the arms from this manufacturer and they are well kosher pukka mint - long, warm, fit around one's guns well, roasty toasty.

One thinks they may also have only been around £15 as well.

  • Just checked and while I'm sure it's excellent, it costs the same as my bike (a Triban excellently refurbed by my local bike co-op), so wayyyy out of my budget. I'll go up to about £50, I think.

The current best breathable waterproof is the Gore-tex Shakedry, however if you're putting in a good amount of effort you'll still sweat-out more than the material can breath, also it's fragile and expensive!

Best to really hope for is to keep your core warm, that's why the Gabba (or equivalent) is popular.

Maybe Altura in the sales then?

Good solid, warm, last for years
