How many road bikes is enough???

General question, i have a Giant Defy and whilst its nice I’ve seen a second hand bike for a couple of grand and I’m sorely tempted, it seems a great deal on a bike with well specked upgraded parts as well.

Not sure how much I’d get for my Giant Defy, would it be worth selling it or keeping it for a winter bike???

Keep the Defy and buy the new one.

Personally I'd keep the defy and have a best bike and a wet / winter bike with proper mudguards on. Although 2nd hand bike prices are good at the moment due to poor supplies due to covid..

You mean turn the Defy into a wet / winter bike?

  • One.
    Plus a gravel bike
    And a pub bike
    Add in a MTB
    Don't forget a cargo-bike
    Something retro

    Hmmm.....

Six it is then, but you only need one road bike.

Here is the "minimum" list of bikes:

    2 CX bikes
    1 singlespeed bike
    I winter bike
1 posh "summer is here" bike
1 crit crusher (something good, but you don't mind crashing)
    1 retro bike
    1 commuter bike
    1 brompton

    So 9 should do it.
    Insert bike here:

    Felt F1 2014
    Felt Z6 2012
    Red Arthur Caygill steel frame

  • If you have to ask, you haven't got enough.
  • You can only ride one at a time.

I don't know , I enjoy the gravel bike on road and there's several guys from work who road cycle and there's an interest but I've not bit the bullet ....yet..
  • Never dispose of a bike unless it doesn't fit you. Or you hate it. I still have the bike I bought in 1985, and ride it the shops.

SImply put, the answer is (as mentioned previously) N+1. Where N is the number f bikes that you currently own...
Early Orange 5, Felt Z85, Scott Thicko, modified Giant full suss (both nicked)- beat-up single-speed rigid 1992 Saracen (scrapped), and various 2-wheelers with big engines

Wife has two bikes that rarely get used, my least used bike does more miles than both of hers.
Although given that she is still recovering from getting knocked off and breaking her pelvis pointing out the lack of use could be considered insensitive 😁

3-4 is plenty for me these days - I mean I have six plus a frameset but that's down 2-3 on a couple of years ago and should really get rid of a couple more.
