9spd Deore from 2007 - New Low Clamp FD or just go new Groupset?

It seems that in this day and age all the old 9spd Deore stuff has disappeared from the shelves... and my 3x9 Front Derailleur (unknown actual model number) has gone the way of the dustbin.

Currently using a FC-M590 44/32/22 Triple crankset, and while i've grabbed a FD-M591 Front Derailleur from Decathlon, the high clamp clashes with the bottle cage mount so I can't use it.

It looks like the FC-m590 is actually both 10s and 9s compatible, so thinking I can replace the FD with similar.

Trying to find an alternative FD and looking at the compatibility charts against what's actually available in shops right now, it appears my options are limited to the Altus series FD-M370 , as the M4000 and M3000 series seem to have a max chainring of 40T.

Is that right?

Ta!

Wiggle are doing a great deal on Shimano 2x11 XT/SLX Mix Groupset £209,
That's a bargain at that price.I would buy it myself and convert my 9s but not got the money right now.

You can generally use different speed FDs on your bike, but to be on the safe side, I would probably still look for an Altus FD which is closest to the one you had previously.
Might be worth checking on a site like https://www.thebikelist.co.uk to see if you can work out the model of your old FD so you get one which is most similar.

Edit: Also make sure you are checking the other 9 speed group sets for other types of bikes as they should be compatible as well. I currently have an altus 48/36/26 with a Deore 9 speed FD which was originally designed for 44/32/22 and just had to move it up the frame. It is the ratios it supports which are what you need to check.

I'd seen that, but the FD is an E-type mount, 12-148 Boost format, so while a bargain at face value, sadly not a lot of use for me here :(

I'm pretty sure any speed triple FD will work with the correct clamp and pull direction

Try a google on "deore FD-M610" Cheap on Amazon.

The M610 band on was my default to look at until i noticed "CHAINWHEEL SIZE 40/42 TEETH CHAINRINGS" but appears to be OOS everywhere -
    Apart from Bankrupt_bike_parts...
Interestingly, the FD-M610 is cheaper than a FD-M590...

  • You can get adapters for E-type FD mounts ;)

The max chainring size for a FD is to do with the curvature of the outer plate of the cage in relation to the curvature of the large chainring.

These figures can be exceeded providing the front of the cage can fit closely to the large chainring teeth without the rear of the outer plate being closer, if not shifting won't be as crisp but it would still work.

I had an M3000 FD fitted with a 40t chainring but that could have accommodated a bigger chainring easily.

The M3000,M4000 or M610 FD could work for your 44 tooth chainring if you have steeper seat tube angle for example but the only way to know for sure would be to try it.

Otherwise buy the Altus or stick within max recommendations to be on the safe side. Ive never noticed much difference in 'higher spec' models when it comes to shift performance and durability on a front derailleur.

Thanks all. I've got the Altus version on order for £9, giving me something to fit over the Xmas period...
