Upgrades: Shimano 105 5700 to R7000?

Hi all, I currently run a 105 5700 RD (10s, 11-28t) with an R7000 chainset (50-34t). I’m wanting to upgrade to an R7000 RD but I’m not sure what other changes I need to make in order to make this happen. I believe the R7000 is an 11 speed setup so I’m not sure if it will fit on my 10 speed freehub? I’ve heard there is a cassette that will fit an 11 speed on a 10 speed cassette.

Would love some guidance and advice. Thanks!

The 11-34 11-speed cassettes fit 10-speed freehubs, I fitted one this summer (to 11-speed freehub wheel) along with swapping out a 5800 RD for a R7000.

Ironically, I've done less hill climbing and cycling in general this year, but the new combo is great for climbing gear options at the expense of the two-tooth 11-13-15 jumps at the top end.

Are you looking to upgrade the rest of the groupset to R7000 or just the rear derailleur?

You can't use 5700 levers (or any 10 speed lever that is compatible with your current rear derailleur) with any of the 11 speed rear derailleurs, there are multiple issues to content with that I won't go into.

  • Waste of money... wait until your current levers break.

But if you want to go ahead with your plan, I am happy to mop up your rear derailleur and levers if the price is right

Thanks that’s helpful to know when I actually do make the swap.

Good point. That extra $250 for shifters/cables is a waste. Might as well run this thing into the ground and do the whole group set.

    Haha noted.
  • it won't work. 5700 shifters have a cable pull that works with 10sp road deraileurs (except tiagra 4700 and grx400) and any 7,8,9 speed road and mtb deraileur... yes, you can use a 9 sp xt mtb deraileur there! I did.

As above I used an Alivio 9speed rear mech. with 105 ( 5700) shifters and 11/34T 10 speed cassette, worked fine ,no problem at all.
