Nukeproof horizon CS pedals

Is anyone here using these pedals? I've recently put these on a new bike. My other bike has XTR trail pedals so I needed something shimano compatible, (yes I know, should have just gone shimano, but I wanted something a bit more trailbikey).
I've kept the Shimano cleats on my shoes.
First ride I immediately was unable to unclip, so I dialled down the spring tension to min, then it was ok. But the engagement is sooo vague, the're barely any click. Do these perform better with the Nukeproof cleats? and if so how well do those cleats perform in shimano pedals?
