New freehub fitted and need to replace two 6001 bearings,

  • Yes... need 5 mm Allen keys, then knock off the bearing with screwdriver and mallet and fit new ones using a home made press of some sort

You'll also need a 17mm spanner to remove the end caps. The axle is held between the bearings, so remove the non drive side bearing first by gently tapping the axle to push the bearing out. Remove the axle, now you'll access to the drive side bearing (through the NDS), again tap out.
When Installing new bearings, only pressing the outer race of the bearing. Sockets are good for this, or even use the old bearing. If you don't have access to a press- the new bearings can be (gently) tapped in- ensuring they're tapped in squarely and only by the outer race.
It's much easier to extract/install bearings if the hub is gently heated causing the alloy to expand. A electric paint stripper is ideal. Sometimes people freeze new bearings (to slightly shrink them) before fitting -again to make it easier to fit.

One other thing, fit the drive side bearing first as it's easier without the axle in place.

    Good luck.

  • Job completed....... thanks again for advice help.
  • Glad it got sorted. As an adjunct, these guys are great for bearing-related tools: BearingProTools.com. Superb customer service, they went above and beyond to make sure I got the right kit for my Hope hubs.

    Obviously home-brewed is possible too.
