Thru axle with QR

I have a Planet X Hurricane that has thru axles.
The rear one is tightened with a hex key.
The front has a QR style lever fitted to it so you use that to screw in the thru axle then flip it over to get this tension right.

This is what I struggle with.
If I haven’t turned it enough the axle is loose.
A little bit more and it’s a b**ger to release the QR lever.

Is this normal for this type of thru axle?

If it is I’ll see if I can replace with hex key one.

My other bike has normal QRs and I don’t have a problem with them.

Bit of a late reply but have you tried holding the QR lever and using it to ease the axle by undoing it as though you are unscrewing slightly? Works on my Domane if I haven’t undone them for a while and they are a bit stiff..

Some through axles with QR levers are frustratingly rubbish, and there's nothing you can do to fix them. Others are great. It sounds like you have the rubbish kind. I've got a bike which came with rubbish ones, it's much less annoying after replacing them with hex key axles.

The QR axle is marked as M12*P1.5*100*122.
    I think that is diameter*screw pitch*hub width*overall length.
I see that Chain Reaction sell a Brand X 100-125-17-M12-P1.5 bolt through axle.
    Is this compatible?

Yes, that should fit, you'll just have a couple of mm sticking out the end because the Brand X axle is slightly longer. That won't have any adverse effect though.

I've ordered the Brand X - let's hope it is the same size hex as the rear :-)
