Chainset help! (Lots of questions and Pictures)
Hey all,
Got my bike last year around November, spent its winter months on the turbo trainer and as the weather got better i took it outside. I went for a ride today and noticed my front derailleur wouldnt drop to lowest chain ring, got off the bike to see that the front derailleur? had actually snapped.
This had just happened, does this look like a manufacturing issue as there is so much rust already?
I also just got a chain checker tool and its showing my chain is stretched, however i have just looked at my chain ring and i think that it may need to be changed aswell?
Then i thought maybe the jockey wheels would need changing so how do they look?
Any help would be great and i do have follow up questions but these are the main things i would like to have so help with.
Thanks you.

You need a new derailleur (possibly caused by corrosion from salt/sweat from turbo use?). It looks like it's been broken a while - the exposed material is starting to oxidise.
Jockey wheels are fine.Ben

As above, more than likely, corrosion from salt/sweat from turbo use.
Better to ride in the rain really0 -
Thank you for the fast reply. I cleaned the bike the other day and didnt see that the derailleur was broken maybe i just wasnt paying attention to it. Though i did ride yesterday and the derailleur was changing fine. Either way i'll replace and thank you for the input.
Any input on the chain ring? is it looking like that would need replacing as well.

I wouldn't say that the FD cage is the obvious place for sweat/salt to congregate during turbo use, but the crack has clearly been there for a while as a lot of the crack faces are rusted already. FDs are relatively inexpensive, so whatever the reason for the failure, I'd just buy another and move on..
Chain rings and jockey wheels look fine to me...0 -
Aside from the broken derailleur, the bike looks as new as you've told us it is!
Any reason to ask about the chain rings? They look fine as well.Ben

Just changed a chain on a friends mountain bike and the chain ring on it was worn so the chain just kept slipping, dont want to buy a new chain and have it slipping and then not be able to ride the bike and i think also as much as i do enjoy the chainset im finding myself spinning out a little to often and maybe wanted to go full shimano 105 but wasnt sure if that would be possible as i know i would need to get a new bottom bracket as well as some adaptor to actually make it fit my bike as it has a bb30 right now but if the crank is find i will just get a chain and front derailleur
Thank you all again for the advice.0 -
Your large chainring should last many thousands of miles, it should be fine (and certainly looks fine).0
