Deeper helmet for a "taller" head - advise please!

Hi there, I'm looking for a piece of collective wisdom on a sensitive topic of choosing a bike helmet (for road riding).

My head is a pretty normal size (59), but a slightly different (taller) shape. As a consequence most helmets I buy seem to be perched on top of the head, leaving too much space (in my view) over the ears and forehead.

I tried a few different models, switched between sizes (M and L), but nothing's doing. Removing some internal padding from the top helps a bit, but isn't ideal due to loss of comfort.

Someone recommended me to get a custom-fitted helmet from HEXR, but I'm not keen on the 300 pounds price tag.

Any suggestions please on the helmet that I should try? Ideally something I can order online in UK or try it in a shop. Many thanks for all responses.

There are some suggestions here though i cant vouch for them and they may be MTB helmets.

Did you miss the link? Eagerly watching this thread as I've a similar issue.
  • Are you having problems because you have an oval head and are trying round head design helmets?

I recently spent £40 on a large https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/HECAKROTT/carnac-kronus-time-trial-helmet and I have an oval ~62cm head. It was very marginal, but even though the top of my head doesn't touch the helmet roof and it's a very tight squeeze front-back (while comfy on the sides), I chose to keep it.

My other helmet coming up to its recommended end of useable life (3 years), an L Giro Savant 59-63cm, touches my head throughout the helmet's roof and sides with plenty of cradle lock adjustability.

Before getting the Giro, I tried a few Kask and Met models, but they didn't fit right at all... Even though I was replacing a very comfy Met Testagrossa bought in 2014.

Why though ? To sell more helmets or are they not as safe ?

UV degradation. Same with hard hats.

Foam material compresses over time and accumulates micro impacts. That said, tests were done on 25-year old helmets and found that that still provide adequate protection. I guess that largely depends on how often you use the helmet and how careful you are with handling it

But my helmet has a very thin bit of plastic over the foam. I can't believe this skin is of any use protecting the head.

Hard hats are very different surely.

I'm not an expert on either, to be honest, I just know what the reasoning is in both cases. It's taken very seriously in the industry I work in (with the hard hat; not cycling helmet) so I subscribe to the theory and best practice.

It's the reason I don't buy overly expensive helmets.

  • I know that in the US there's official guidance from a government agency, recommending replacing helmets every 5-10 years. The manufacturers reduce this term to 3 years, albeit the jury is out on the best term
