Wider back wheel

I have a specialised hardrock,can i fit a wider back tire or wheel? have 26x2 with schwalbe marathon tours .Now i have fitted the panniers the back wheel looks very thin.

    Yes the Hardrock can take a wider back tyre, up to 2.25" is no problem.

    But really, most people with panniers are on road.touring bikes with much thinner tyres (i'm on 28mm on my commuting bike). they'll be fine.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
