Upgrade or new bike?

Hi all, asking for a mate.

His got a merida ride 90 bike 2014, his getting more into cycling sinse getting it second hand.

I've given him some new brakes which helps but question is:
keep upgrading it?
Brand new bike or good second hand for £1200?.

Any recommendations welcome.

Unless he has definite ideas of the kind of bike he wants to get, I would just upgrade the one he has for a bit until he has had a bit more experience on it and decided on the kind of riding he likes to do the most.
