Free hub sounds gritty

So when ever I back-pedal or coast my wheel I can hear a gritty noise coming from my free hub but it doesn’t happen when pedalling I had a bike mechanic look at it and he said the bearings are fine and that it’s probably just some grit between the free hub and the shell of the hub and not to worry about it, I was curious would it actually do any damage to just leave it

    I'm not sure how a mechanic can check the bearings without removing the freehub, in which case he could have cleaned it from said grit.

    The free hub is internally bolted in but he took the axel out and checked the bearings for noises and play
