XC MTB for under £1000 ??

What recommendations do you have for a XC geometry bike for under £1k. Am not expecting a carbon frame for that kind of money. Looking for a front suspension 29er with around 100mm travel.
Currently using a 2010 Specialised Rockhopper with 26" wheels and 100mm spring front suspension so time to upgrade and turn this into a commuter.
Looking to take part in races.

The frames are good and provide a good base for upgrades. It will make a great starter race bike.
