Which bike is best for her?

My wife can't ride a normal bike. Her knees won't let her due to an operation she had on them. As she turns the crank and her knee comes up she is unable to complete the revolution. Is there a particular type of bike available which might ease this problem? I had considered a recumbent, but that would be a problem negotiating the cycleway barriers.

You've already mentioned my thought. You can get hand pedal trikes that are pretty compact as well. Might be worth talking to British Cycling or possibly one of the disabled sports groups. Another possibility is an ebike, not sure how it would work range wise without pedalling.
Too many bikes according to Mrs O.

You might get away with very short cranks
