Upgrading from giant defy2

after some advice..I’m thinking (ie haven’t told the mrs!) of treating myself to a new bike.
I’ve currently got a giant Defy composite 2 which is probably about 5 years old.
It‘s going to have to be 2nd hand so I get more for my money and looking to spend under £1k.
what sort of makes and models do you think I should be on the look at for which would make it a worthwhile upgrade for that price?

I’d suggest a Trek Emonda Sl5. I went from a Defy to this and loved it. Slightly more aggressive but still not as aggressive as a Tarmac or TCR.
The Sl5 is 105, stiff and I noticed an immediate difference at how much faster it accelerated than the defy.
A 2018 model typically goes for the price you’re looking at.
Keep an eye on eBay and gumtree.
If you could stretch a bit over the £1000 an sl6 ultegra can often be found for £12000
