Which energy drink?

I use High5 if I am doing seriously intense sessions but haven't used it on any long rides for a very long time. The longer the rider the lower the intensity for me so instead I enjoy and rely on whole foods. Staples for me are homemade Veloforte bars (easy, tasty and super long shelf life), bananas, white bread with peanut butter and jam, bag of raisins with some nuts, and a bit of salt. Just do you. Find what works.0

Did he really ? I've seen film of him talking about nutrition and he points out you're burning 6-700 calories an hour but can only absorb 3-400 calories an hour.webboo said:This is just not true Cruff. If you train your body to burn your fat stores, you can still ride at more than a snails pace.
This has been established for years, I remember Mark Allen winning the Nice long distance triathlon several decades ago and only consuming water.
So you have to burn your reserves either way.0 -
As I understand it if I were to try and ride a 100K under 3 and half hours I would have take on board carbs as at that pace I would be no longer at an aerobic level I would be anaerobic so burning more energy than is stored as glycogen. However if I was riding at a pace to do 100K in 4 and half hours I would not need anything other than water as I would riding at an aerobic level and my glycogen stores plus my fat stores would suffice.0

Nonsense. Its true that riding at a lower intensity, provision of energy for the ATP/ADP cycle necessary to fuel that work comes primarily from the breakdown of fats. However, there will always be some carbohydrate (in the form of an energy drink, a bar, a gel etc) once that ride goes over whatever buffer of readily available carbs you already have in your system. For that not to be the case the intensity would have to be so low that you wouldn't be able to turn the pedals at much more than about 8mph.webboo said:This is just not true Cruff. That's why people 'bonk' even when they aren't doing anything with intensity. It's also why the 'fat burning zone' is a myth designed to appease bone idle people. In order to use that energy system efficiently, you'd need to ride for about 12 hours at 8mph to get any meaningful benefit in the form of weight loss.
Don't just ride with water for anything longer than two hours - it's not even up for debate.Fat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

So how come I can ride 100K on water without bonking and at above 8 mph.0

Because you already have sufficient carbs in you. If you tried it without, you would bonk spectacularly.webboo said:So how come I can ride 100K on water without bonking and at above 8 mph.

Have a good breakfast, ride with water, have a good lunch. All sorted. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Sure. If you're just going to ride at 20k/h on the flat...Fat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

I must tell my body to reduce it's performance to the low standard that you set then. 🤔cruff said:Sure. If you're just going to ride at 20k/h on the flat...

Are you related to the imbecile who used to tell people he got 10,000 miles out of a bike chain, by any chance?
OP - the tl;dr of this thread is - use an energy drink or something else (bar, gel etc) to fuel you on rides of any intensity over an hour and a half. My choice is High5, but loads of other people swear by SIS, or Nuun, or Tailwind - or any number of other brands. Personal choiceFat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

So in your own words as a sh*te 3rd cat who is 10 kilos heavy than the folk you are racing do you not think you may be over doing the carbs.0

No idea what you're on about. Real world cycle last week. 36.5 km at an average of 32.2kms/hr so not race pace but not exactly snails pace and with 250m of climbing not exactly flat either. All on one 650ml bidon of water.
Another one, 60kms, at an average of 31kms/hr and with 664m climbing.
YMMV but it doesn't necessarily apply to everyone.
The rest of the post is fair enough.

I use Bulk Powders Compete Hydration. https://www.bulkpowders.co.uk/complete-hydration-drink.html Always wait for an offer, up to 40% off, and work out the price per scoop as sometimes the smaller bags work out cheaper than the bigger bags! Last lot, which I’m still working my way through work out at 20p per 500ml bidon. Much cheaper than many of the other powders and nutritionally all good stuff.
