Aero Wheels: Section Geometry or Material

I currently have a 2013 Trek Madone 5.2 running H Plus Son SL42 wheels (105 hubs) and I'm looking to upgrade to carbon wheels. My current wheels are 42mm deep aluminum so they're quite heavy, although bulletproof. My question is do I already have the aero benefit with my current deep aluminum wheels, or are deep carbon wheels that much better? I would hate to drop some cash on a carbon wheelset only to find that i don't see much difference between my current wheels once they're up to speed. Thanks

Air doesn't know whether it's travelling over aluminium or over carbon does it?
Once up to speed, it's almost all down to the shape.
Getting up to speed also depends on the weight.
Lots of companies make lots of claims - but check out what Hunt says about their 34 aero wide disc wheelset.
