Zipp firecrest Hub rear

To have cranks changed however I was aware of a bit of play on the back wheel a little more than should be and the mechanic rang me to say I needed a new axle free hub and bearings now I’m not mechanical but the wheel seemed to buzz along ie free hub clicking away in freewheel so I was a bit surprised to need the whole lot upgraded ??
Any comments please
