Just bung em in for the lulz and old school vibe?
Has anyone tried it?

Not tried it, but yes of course you can (assuming it’s a disc brake), you’ll have a BB circa 1/2” lower is all.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.1

Wheels are part of your gearing from pedal to road, and because the wheel diameter is now slightly smaller, you will have a slightly reduced top speed, but you will get there quicker!1

Perhaps 26" wheel but with a big fat tyre on it? (if it'd clear the frame).
Just an idle thought, i do kinda think it'd be cool though. There's always someone having a worse day than you.
