Shoes - long less volume?

Need some new shoes, been using Shimano R171 size 47 which are OK fit wise but a little bit too baggy - my previous Fiziks (the ones that PlanetX sold cheap 46.5) were similar.
I think I need a fairly roomy toe box but without a lot of volume in the mid foot or heel - my feet are kind of wedge shaped - not narrow but my main issue is my big toe is the longest point not the 2nd or 3rd toe and I think I'm often having to get shoes half a size too big to accommodate that and then having to tighten the ratchets too much to compensate..
Anyone recommend a make that might be worth trying as a starting point - I realise it's always a case of try it and see but it'd help to be able to make an educated guess.
Was thinking of giving Lake a go - their competition fit - or Giro - mainly because both do lace ups and thought that may be worth trying for more micro adjustment - and I like the retro look.
