Got back into riding and have bought what I think is the wrong type of bike for what I need, not an issue as can sell but what should I be looking for?
I ride on the Isle of Wight - I ride farm tracks, fields, over the downs on small lanes, tracks, I try to take in a couple of climbs and descents during my 20-30km rides
Typical terrain:

I'd suggest an XC style hardtail, possibly a rigid if you want to make it a bit lighter.
Either of these are worth a look

had been considering a hardtail but my ass takes a pounding on some of the rides so leaning towards full suss... want to find a happy medium I guess0

Larger tyre, lower pressure or learning to adjust pedal stroke to lift your arris at the right time would all help.
XC full suspension tend to be quite pricey as it's the trail market that's most catered for, they will also add circa 2/3-1kg to the bike weight.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
