Disc brake advice

I've got a 2012 Specialized 29er carbon camber comp, I'm happy with most of the components (now I've swapped the Fox Triad II for Rockshox Monarch RT3 Debonair). The only issue is the appalling Avid Elixir 7 disc brakes, poor stopping power, have a nasty habit of sticking/locking on, and make that awful 'turkey gobble' noise!
I'm after advice on an effective upgrade without breaking the bank. I've seen an offer on Magura MT Trail Sport £131 for a set and a set of rotors for just over £40.

Any one have experience with these can recommend an alternative? I've looked at Shimano Zee and Hope Tech 3 E4 but might be on the pricey side.
