Shimano AM701 - For flat and SPD use?

Hi,
Looking for a pair of flat MTB shoes for the boy and he’s being fussy. He’ll outgrow them soon enough so not wanting to spend a fortune. Looking at the Shimano AM701, it has the bolt holes for SPD but looks reasonably recessed. Anyone have experience of these shoes, do they work ok on flat pedals? We will likely fit cleats as sometimes he rides clipless.
Or any other suggestions for a budget flat specific shoe? He’s already vetoed the Planet X ones.
Thanks

If you try and use shoes with SPD cleats fitted on flat pedals you may find that the cleats prevent the sole from 'sinking' on to the pedal pins thereby losing grip.
If he is still growing just look for second hand shoes on action sites.
