Why does a bottom bracket tighten occasionally?

    I take it that you mean a BSA bottom bracket? The reason that it tends to tighten is the effect of the left/right hand thread combination. However I would be surprised if it actually did tighten it the correct torque loading was applied on assembly.
    Long assembled parts can require more effort to remove them due to static friction, known as stiction. Overcoming the stiction can require more torque than was applied in assembly.
