Miche Primato Bearing pre-load

Just a quick numptie question. Replaced the rear bearings on my Miche Primato hubs last year. have only done a couple of hundred miles on the since then. ON my ride yesterday I heard a bit of rubbing that seemed to come from the rear wheel. Checked on my return and their seemed to be a tiny bit of lateral play on the rear wheel bearings.
Assume that I've not killed the new bearings in that short distance but wondered if I'd not set the pre-load enough when re-assembling last year.

My question - is it OK to tweak the pre-load collar with the wheel still on the bike or do I have to take it off

I assume its ok because I have tweaked it more than once.
If you position the small grub screw uppermost it makes it easier.
  • I understand that it should be done in the frame due to the clamping force of the skewer.
