New wheels for old bike, or new bike?!

Hi All
Please can you offer some advice?
I have 2011 Giant Defy 2 (Alloy frame, 9sp Sora groupset) which I use for a 13 mile each way commute. It’s all working well and I have recently replaced the chain, cassette and rear mech.
However, the rims on the original wheels have now worn down beyond the wear markers so new wheels are needed.
First question is what wheels would you recommend?
I will fit 28c tyres which is the maximum width I can fit through the calipers.
The Cero AR24 seem good value at £189 and would be a lot lighter than the originals, but maybe not as robust?
Second question is do you think it is actually worth spending more money on such an old bike – maybe it’s better to put it towards a new bike?
I quite like the idea of hydraulic brakes, 1x and wider tyres and I see Planet X are selling their old XLA and XLS cyclocross bikes very cheap at the moment eg XLA Rival 1 for £600. How would this ride compared to the Defy?
Let me know what I should do!
Many thanks

I don't want to start the old disc v caliper debate again but I just can not stand the sound of rim brakes grinding away at my alloy rims in wet weather. For me,my wet weather bike just has to be disc. Therefore your decision has to be a new disc brake bike.0

I have some Cero ARD 23 wheels. They are really nice light wheels but even though I am a little light weight I don't think I would want them on a commuter bike.0

£125 for a pair of https://www.merlincycles.com/mavic-aksium-clincher-road-wheelset-175803.html (Aksium Ones are ~£25 more expensive) and get the £600 XLA Rival 1 hydraulic?================

Hello there. I am new here. Interesting thread, thanks for the information.-2

The answer of course is both.
N0bodyOfTheGoat's wheel suggestions are good vfm and if you've only used the original wheels these will pep up the bike anyway. You don't think you will get much selling the old Defy.
Plus a new shiny bike for the summer/dry days or longer rides.
That's what I did with an older similar Giant SCR (predecessor of Defy) and I've been very happy.0 -

Thank you for your responses and suggestions. Very useful. I’ll get some wheels for the Defy for now, and consider the new bike option later. Cheers.0

Was going to say myself that the best option if possible would be new wheels for now and then a new bike later.
Can always use the current bike then as a winter bike and the new one otherwise.
That said if you do get disc brakes on your new one they do work better in the wet.0 -
I personally only find they lock up if you grab too much of the brake or have to brake suddenly. I modulate my braking and plan ahead rather than having to smash the brakes on at any point. Not saying it doesn't happen but you can definitely reduce the chance.
