The last of the incredibly talented 2002 Mapei u23 team to retire. Eisel, Cancellara, Pozzato, Rogers, Davis, Petrov

I wonder if he was forced out by Riis.

that last crash nearly killed him (head trauma) so maybe he is not at a level he would consider good enough or maybe he just doesnt need to do it anymore. He's ridden at the highest level and had the good fortune to be on the winning side at the TdF

Or he's 38, soon 39 and is starting to feel his age.
“Road racing was over and the UCI had banned my riding positions on the track, so it was like ‘Jings, crivvens, help ma Boab, what do I do now? I know, I’ll go away and be depressed for 10 years’.”

Friebos tweeted it best, "Some riders build palmares, Eisel built an institution"
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

  • Cycling Podcast suggest he wanted another year but didn't get a deal.
I'd have thought it was 'time' for hime, esp given recent injuries. I hope he gets a good gig in the industry.
