What difference? I fitted a shock with the wrong stroke length what can I expect?

As the title says, I replaced an ancient 7.5” x 1.75” (191mmx45mm) fox septune with a fox float performance off eBay which 190mmx40mm, with 190mmx45mm available that clearly would have been a better fit. What difference can I expect?

You will have less travel. The eye to eye length is about the same, so the static geometry won't be affected, but there is less space to compress.

You don't say what bike it is or how much travel you had before, so I'll say it's 130mm for this example. 130/45 gives a ratio of 2.89. 2.89x40 = 115.5, so you would now have 115.5mm travel on the rear. This will also affect the geometry when the suspension is compressed - The fork will still compress the same amount, but you'll have less compression at the rear, so the angles will steepen. If possible, send it back and get the right size.
