You're keen HD. I don't usually start planning my skiing jaunt until after the clocks go back and it's proper dark and miserable outside.

Where are you off to this season?

  • No plans yet Stevo, we’re no longer bound by the school holidays so will probably go last minute depending on where the snow is best

Me neither HD. Actually I've never been stuck with school hols as thankfully wife and kid have never wanted to go 8)

Will decide once the snow starts falling, although it definitely won't be Sweatland.

  • I fancy the Dolomites again this year on the Sella Ronda somewhere, but also thinking of one of the Austrian party resorts too. I haven't been to Kitzbuhel for years!

Due to the B work malarkey work has gone a bit quiet so Japan may have to wait another year.

St. Anton is the dog's danglies for me out of the Austrian lot, its just a bit popular so last minute deals are tricky. Japan doesn't appeal as the resorts seem to be absolutely rammed with people - if it's long haul I fancy a trip to Whistler/Blackcomb as I haven't been there since the 90's and it was superb.

Although we'll probably end up going to one of the big French resorts like we usually do....

  • I was a bit disappointed with St Anton to be honest, everyone raves about the kanguruh etc but they're a bit "I need to be seen here" for my liking. Basecamp was much better for a few beers after a full day out.

Unpisted blacks are better than beers:

I fancy Japan because of the snow, skiing powder in the alps is great but the thought of floating through the trees on fairly mellow slopes just sounds like heaven, plus a few days in Tokyo to boot would be an excellent holiday.

The Mooserwirt is better than the Kanguruh :) Although I like St. Anton as it has good skiing and good nightlife which you don't often get in the same place. Never have done that itinerary from the top of the cable car though IIRC you need a guide otherwise they don't let you go up.

Still prefer the big French resorts overall though.

I went to breckenridge/vail/Arapahoe basin/beaver creek ( :D ) back in Jan 2008 for 10 days. Best skiing I ever experienced. Of course, back then a quid bought you ~ 2 dollars. We had a half-board (plus cake) catered house in Breckenridge for next to nothing, hired a big car. Utterly brilliant.

I want to go skiing across The Pond again.

I remember there was much Finbarr-style sniggering on the transfer to Whistler when we passed a sign for 'Furry Creek' :P

  • Nah you don’t need a guide for that one, it’s just unpisted

  • A few bike threads on the Snowheads forum, seems like the internet is leaking.
  • I’m on there too, you’ve never heard such a set set of pretentious t**ts in your life.

Not all night I add, but a lot of them are.

  • Have booked to go to Whistler again. Was a bit strange booking it in August but there was a ridiculously good early booking deal that finished at the end of the month.

May also have a weekend away with my brother, if we do we’ll probably go to Austria

Good call. One of the few non-European resorts that was worth the trek for me. Some of the double black diamond runs are great.

    Jackson Hole.

It's not that some of the others were bad, it was more a case of why fly long distances and get jet lag etc when we have so much great stuff on our doorstep in Europe.

Yep, that's fair. Whistler is great and has the added benefit of us knowing 2 families that have emigrated to Vancouver that we can meet up with while we are there, but it is a helluva long way to go for a ski holiday.
  • The only state side skiing I've done was Winter Park. Very good, very high and very cold.

We did think about Whistler this season but being in the northern manufacturing powerehouse it seems some London based suits have put the brakes on the economy so I might just be able to scrape a week in the Dolomites.

My son is a keen skier. The only thing that's stopping him going this year* is that his knee bent the wrong way the last time he went in Jan.

ACL is torn and he is awaiting an op

*also stops his hockey, football, walking ect.

The older I get, the better I was.

  • Ouch! Hope he gets mended soon.

As Black Friday is fast approaching, I thought I'd mention that last year we managed to pick up some great deals on the Burton website for gear for both of our kids (13 and 11 yrs old). Worth having a look on there if you do need new stuff, even though it was right at the beginning of the season some of the discounts were really solid.
