Replacing Jagwire Inner Cables

Dear Forumites
I have a bike that has 105 5800 Hydro Groupset and installed with Jagwire gear cables. I want to replace the inner cables as they are a year old and I have heard of stories of the shift inners fraying at the shifter end etc.
However the Jagwire seems to have a thin plastic coating where it exits the outer casing. Is this part of the inner or a sheath that goes over the end? Can I use normal Shimano inners with Jagwire outers etc. Don't really want to replace outers this time as bar tape is still looking nice and don't want the hassle or rewrapping this time round.
Any pointers?
Ta.

Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

A good bit of maintenance saves expensive repair!
If your riding warrants a pre emptive cable repair it probably warrants new outers. Others may disagree but my view is the cable and and outwrs are a system. I understand the appeal of leaving nice bar tape alone but if youve used the bike enough to need to change the inner then you probably need to change the salty tape too.
In any case it’s good fun and makes your bike look better0 -
I htink the cable your referring to is similar to other brands who put a PTFE sleeve on the inside of the outer cable (confusing but you get me I hope). You can replace just the cable inner cable. I would recommend a stainless cable as it tends to last a bit longer especially if you have any exposed areas.
You can do the outers as well if you feel they are needed. As above I usually bin off my tape once a year as it gets rather funky especially if it rains.0 -
I replace inner cables several times before I consider doing the outers and bar tape. The exception being the small loop at the rear derailleur which gets the worst of the road filth and is often corroding before anything else. That's easily replaced at the same time as the inners. I usually use standard Shimano SP41 outer / SS inners0

Thanks guys. AS I've only done 2000 miles this year due to health issues I think I can get away with just doing the inners. The bar tape is in very good nick and I quite like it. It is Felt reflective microsuede bar tape and it costs a bomb to replace if you can get it at all.

I'll strip it down and have a look at the PTFE sheath thing. It's mostly internally cabled hence my reluctance to change the outers at this point. Just wanted a "quick fix" preventative measureSometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Jagwire cable sets come with end caps that have a protruding sheath for weather protection. Is that what you're looking at?
