So,

New toy for my birthday, Elemnt bolt. Very happy with, so much so I want to keep it safe on my bars (having had a Garmin fall off in the past). £17 for a piece of string???

Does anyone have an alternative solution they use, or know what size thread the hole for the Wahoo tether is so I can try and fashion something?

Thanks

Stuart

The BOLT comes with a little screw doesn't it?

Use the screw that came with it. Far more secure than a piece of cord.

I have the tether which I must admit is a ridiculous cost for what it is but like you I’ve had a GPS fly off never to be seen again so I didn’t want to chance it.

Bought it from Wahoo themselves along with something else so at least I didn’t get further stung with extortionate P&P.

The screw is a good alternative but I didn’t fancy faffing around unscrewing it every time it needed charging & the cable wouldn’t fit in between the bottom of the unit & my stem faceplate to charge it in situ, on my bike anyway.
  • The screw method is a pain if you keep taking it on and off form what I can see, plus I use the computer on my MTB as well which uses the normal mount and the screw method doesn't work on that.

I might be able to use the screw in the tether hole though and fashion a mount for a normal tether. Didn't think of that so thank you for reminding that other screw existed.

Blimey, a 1 minute job to remove a screw. Unless you're doing rapid quick changes between bikes, I don't see an issue.

  • 1 minute on in the morning, 1 minute off at work, 1 minute back on, 1 minute back off at home etc etc. Then getting the tool in and out each time. Plus it doesn't solve the MTB issue. A simple tether is a 2 second job.

If the bespoke tether is the only thing out there then so be it, but thought I'd check for the sake of £17 when my Garmin solution cost about £1.

Tbh the mount is pretty secure. The roads around me are like swiss cheese (pot hole wise) and yet not once has the wahoo come close to falling off. I have also done plenty of mountain bike rides and the bolt has always stayed put.

So if you do need to remove it frequently just make sure it's clipped in place before you start your ride.

This. I just coughed up and bought one, it's worth it in the long run.
plus when my hands are full to walk down to my bike from the office, I can just hook it over a finger instead of needing to actually carry it.

My Garmin 520 came with one which was more annoying.
  • I'd actually be more bothered about the mounting to the handlebars than the computer falling off the mount. I managed, with very little effort, to tighten the screw too far on the mount and pushed the screw too far through it. It's holding but I'm checking it regularly.
