Hi guys.

I'm looking for some advice and recommendations.

I'm after a new wheelset. 29er XC. 6 bolt disc. 100 x 9 qr front hub. 135 qr rear hub. budget £300 or £400 at a push.

choices seem to be limited due to need for older style qr wheelset.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Thanks.

    Hunt?

QR XT rear hubs are £30 odd at CRC at the moment, decent place to start?

Superstar Elements look a good option. 1850g the pair

Or these Fukcrums (note, centrelock discs)

Second vote for Superstar wheels. They do a lot of discount codes as well. Sign up to their email and Facebook pages.

For that budget you could probably buy some suitable hubs and rims and get some built.

Superstar and Hope hubs also have interchangeable end caps for QR, 15mm, 20mm etc so a 2nd hand Hope wheelset might be an option?

  • Also, you don't HAVE to get 9mm QR hubs. The usual standard is 15mm bolt through (or with a 15mm QR axle), but the 15mm hubs all come with end caps that push into the 15mm hole and have a 9mm hole running through them.

My grandson's 26er has 9mm qr forks, but has Mavic Crossmax wheels with 15mm hubs.

That should open up your options considerably. It also gives you some freedom if and when you want to upgrade your fork!
