Garmin edge 830 compatibility issues

So I've just upgraded from an edge 1000 to the newer (and smaller) edge 830, only to discover that the bontrager light control app isn't compatible with the new device. That means that I can't control my ion lights that cost a fortune just for the remote control mode features.
I've spoken to both Garmin and bontrager who both say "they aren't currently compatible". - great help (not).
Has anyone come up with a solution to this? Tempted to send the 830 back and stick with my 1000.
And yes, I know I can turn on the units and sequence through the modes manually, but I could have bought much cheaper lights if that's what I was wanting to do.
Any thoughts appreciated.
