Rub on wax on top of oiled chain, or degrease first?

Hi, I have bought a rub on wax product, its pretty thick stuff. Instructions say rub on, but dont mention cleaning or oil. Given the chain has a light oil, can the wax'ed lube be applied on top of the lightly oiled chain or do I have to go through the hassle of taking the chain off, degreasing and starting from stratch? thanks. Basically do wax and chain oil play nicely together?

    degrease and clean then apply usually works.

    Definitely degrease and clean to remove what dirt is there now.
