Not a local but the main problem is the collapsed bridge is south of Grinton, so not on either of the routes you've created. Have a wander round in Streetview, you can see what it looked like before the flooding

Oh. I just typed Grinton Bridge into Google maps and got the wrong one. This is probably what happened at the Battle of Arnhem

In jest maybe, but he probably would have got it sorted.

Maybe he/she is just aggravated that one of her/his key agency workers went to work for Yorkshire and copyrighted the “God’s Own” phrase when he/she was always more of a North Devon kinda gal/guy?

Took more like 3 years to replace all the bridges washed away in Cumbria by Storm Desmond in 2015...

yeah but lots of that is down to the inner workings of local councils and government and going through all the hoops and loops of things to get approvals to get any stuff done. youll probably find they lost a chunk of time just publishing the designs of the replacement bridges and making sure they were compliant with their own local planning guides and/or any updates in bridge safety design.

its not a look we really need this bridge fixed now jfdi approach process, which is clearly whats needed here

I do love this country but seriously we need to have a stern word sometimes, this year my family forced me to go skiing in the Alps in Feb. and boy they'd had some snow, all the roads were cleared several times a day and everything was opening and functioning, no one bats an eyelid and yes yes they have that every year so are geared up for it, but damn UK do we not have year on year cold/wet/windy and now hot weather.... sort it out it's a tiny stone bridge people not the Hoover dam

I don’t think they need to bother repairing it. They just need to ask for volunteers on the day of the race and get them to lie down in stream bed , add a few sheets of plywood.
There you have a job well done and a Yorkshire legend. You can guess how it will go.

EDIT - was being thick, as pointed out up-thread that still comes out before the collapsed bridge.

They could do a long loop round from Hawes via Nateby, Keld etc and come over Buttertubs from the other side - then back down Wensleydale toward Leyburn and on to Masham, Ripon back to Harrogate.

For info my profile pic is of said collapsed bridge during the 2014 Tour. I’ve got family connections in Reeth - this has been a devastating flood for some folks and a bike race is frankly the least of their worries. There’s plenty of options for other routes in the Dales.

That might just be the best use for yorkshire folk ever! :D:D
  • Anyone suggested just setting up a ramp and getting them to jump it?

Twofold win: sorts out the people who can handle bikes best, and also prevents the main bunch soft pedalling for at least that section.

Saw that Stybar was out on recon today and stopped to take a selfie by the bridge, it's on his Instagram story

Wouldn't have thought it would be too much of an issue like

Wout van Aert must be crossing his fingers they divert over fields, over stone dykes via a plank across the stream.

Now he's a revelation this year but that's another thread.

And that they put it back several months, as he says his rehabilitation is going to be a long process.

This is pretty much it. Large motorway and rail bridges can and do get replaced literally overnight but that's with a lot of pre-planning and design. Also, you aren't going to easily transport pre-fabricated bridges along roads like that. Mainly it will be a case of whether the cost of a temporary replacement is justified against the problems caused by the bridge being down, if not they'll take their time to build a proper replacement that blends into the surroundings. The other thing to think about, although it looks unlikely to be an issue here, is that the bridge may be carrying a load of services cables and pipes so work needs co-ordinating to allow for those to be repaired or replaced too.

2 months before he starts intensive training again, according to CW.

sounds like they are going to build a temporary bridge/road, but not fix the actual bridge till the Spring https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/racing/temporary-road-will-built-bridge-yorkshire-world-championships-course-blown-apart-debris-433761
