Hi all
I was mainly cycling but have recently started running a bit more too.
I'm interested in a new watch and think want multisports/Tri watch and since I already have a Garmin Edge 500 bike computer a chest heart rate monitor (ant+ only) and I would like cadence sensors for the bike, I'm looking at the Garmin watches particularly the new Fenix. range

I'm a bit confused with the pricing and various differences.
If I understand correctly, the top Fenix 5x + has blood oxygen saturation legal monitor useful at higher altitudes, which I don't need however it seems cheaper then the Fenix 5+? Why is the top model cheaper than the lower one?
I also understand you can pay mo e for sapphire glass faces, is there them a titanium version too, if so again is it just different glass face?
Does the mapping give turn by turn notification either audio or vibration so you know to look at it when coming to a turn.
Do you need data connection on phone for mapping or is it independent from phone?IE if just wanting navigation on a run could I leave phone behind? I know I wouldn't get calls/emails/texts notification just music and directions as well as any training plans?
Whilst paired to phone, would I need access to phone to do anything or is it all done through watch and phone be in n jersey pocket?
Will the data on watch including map be also display on the edge 500? Or would it replace need for the bike computer too?
Is there anything else to consider? I would like mapping , estimate vox, used for cycling and running training usual monitors activity tracking etc

I've got the 5x + sapphire version and if you want something that does everything then it's the watch for you.

Pulse Ox Acclimatization really doesn't count at your usual altitudes and to be honest even when I was skiing at 2000m + I was still at 95+% most of the time.

Its a good little gimmick though but beyond what I'll ever need.

I've not used the mapping function except to fiddle about with it so can't say weather it gives notifications or not.

You do not need your phone for the watch to work with any of its functions.

I'm 99% that anything you need to do is done on the watch so you don't need to access your phone, apart from pairing headphones etc.

No I don't think there will be a cross over of data between devices.

The only thing to consider is that it is quite heavy, I wear mine daily now and have got used to it but it took a few weeks at first.
    Advocate of disc brakes.

I don't know if it beeps or buzzes but it will do turn by turn navigation.

No phone is needed to use a Garmin device. Maps are stored on the unit itself.

Data from the watch will not be displayed on an Edge 500. It could replace a cycling head unit but the display is a bit small to make it a long term solution and having it on your wrist is not an ideal place to use it while cycling. Bike mounts are available.

    Thanks both.
How much should I be paying for the Fenix 5+ sapphire? As I'm sure the 5x sapphire is £487 ish on wiggle, whereas I've seen some for over £700

Thought I read/saw something implying displays on both head unit and watch so no n ed to mount direct to bike.
Also any difference with the titanium version?

They were on sale on Amazon Prime day the other week.

There's so much functionality on the Fenix - you'll prob not use most of it. I've a normal Fenix 3 and no problems with the face. I'd not pay more - whatever you get use a screen protector anyway.

You can enable Turn by Turn - your watch will buzz you.

    No need for data connection.

The watch does everything - you dont need the phone for it to work but you cant reply to messages etc through the watch.

It won't broadcast to the edge computer. Get one or the other - but not both. I've had the fenix for 4 years or so now - never missed a beat and I don't bother with bike computers now.

Hmm so bit more research and reading, even more confused.

    I've found a forerunner 945 for £400, price on wiggle is £515.

The 945 is later model.but bit more plasticity then the Fenix 5+.

I think I'll go for the forerunner.

Out of it nterest anyone know do I need Spotify premium to use data and without going via phone or can I use the freebie and still leave phone at home?
Although I'd probably still have phone with me for art notification.

Also are the bike mounts the standard 1/4 turn we as for the edge 500 computer?
