How much are you willing to spend, if not a lot a hardtail.

What type of marathons, XC or time trialed.
Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"

I havn't set a limit... i am not afraid to spend a bit more money on the bike when it is worth it.

I like marathons with a lot of climbing. The ones i do are not that technical in my opinion...

100mm-ish travel full sus 29er, make it as light as you can afford.

    SC blur
    Specialized epic
    Pivot Mach 4 SL
    Giant Anthem
    Scott scale

    Etc

Only go for a hardtail if you are 1. Hoping to podium, 2. Doing short runs as part of a team or 3. A masochist
    Santa Cruz 5010C
    Deviate Guide
    Specialized Sequoia Elite
    Pivot Mach 429SL
    Trek Madone 5.2 Di2
    Salsa Mukluk Carbon
    Specialized Turbo Levo Expert 29er

Intense Sniper’s also worth a look.
