Buzzard strike

Out training last Tuesday evening and as I passed under some trees I was hit on the back of the head by something heavy.
Initial though was a branch had fallen, second thought was some yob had thrown something over the hedge at me, so I did U turn having decided to have it out with them. Then a buzzard swooped down and I realised I was under attack so did another 180 and legged it out of there waving my arm at the buzzard to disuade it for a few hundred yards until it lost interest.
First time I have ever experienced anything like that and also perhaps for the first time glad I was wearing a helmet (or maybe that was what attracted it).
Anyone else experienced similar?

Local area had a mad buzzard that attacked many a passing cyclists. Was called "the Pentir buzzard" as that was were it lived.

    Famous amongst local cyclists.

looks like it hates runners also

As a youngster climbing trees I thought my friends were having fun by throwing stones at me.
No, I was being dive bombed by a starling (or similar). I was obviously too close to the nest. Quite sore.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

I've been attacked by Arctic Terns. Their beaks hurt when they hit the scalp. I was on foot at the time.

I remember reading an article last year reporting a similar incident, only the rider involved didn't escape unscathed and had quite a gash to the back of his neck if I recall correctly.
Think the RSPB warned it was likely due to the buzzard protecting its young.

Anyway, never be ashamed to run away...

I was chased up the road by a capercaillie a few weeks ago . I got my phone-cam out when I first saw it but I think it must have objected to being filmed.

Yes . When he got close I realised that he is quite well equipped to deliver some nasty cuts and I did not want him flying at me on the bike as we could both get hurt. He started by suddenly flying across my face out of the woods . Fortunately he did not chase when I rushed away on the bike.

  • Cable ties through your helmet is a thing. Saw a few people in Australia like this last spring. Looks very odd.

  • I don't think Buzzard strikes are that rare, not in mid June to mid July anyway. I know a road about ten miles away where I would put the odds of being "buzzed" at about 50%. The first time it happened to me, it had completed its first strafing run with its talons within a foot of my head before I realised wtf was going on. It then swung round and looked me straight in the eye as it made a second run! I had my arms flapping and evrything to try and put it off. I've been over that road (a gentle cimb) a few times since at this time of year and been attacked most times!

Chuckling at the zip ties solution.
