So my freehub has gave up and seems a straight forward job in replacing it. Only question is & basic but is there a specific shimano hub needed to replace it or can a generic one less expensive available?

You need the 17mm axle version - I think the cheaper ones are 12mm.

If the ratchets are in good knick it's probably just needs new springs on the pawls which is way cheaper. And if the teeth have gone you pretty much need a new hub/ wheel anyway

Spare part number 5-FH-RE114 spring ... If the pawls are knackered. Also get 3 times 3-FH-BO013 ("BO" zero one three)

Evans have them online for six quid
