Hi
I have an old rigid frame MTB (Leisure Lakes own brand XLR8 - Tange Presige), I bought the frame several years ago but rather than getting a new getting the new groupset it deserved life got in the way and it ended up being stored in the garage loft.
It seems to be a lovely frame which has seen little use but had been stripped of all the good components which had been on it.
Back to today and I'm looking at putting a cheapish groupset on. It will be mainly used for light off road and on road... nothing serious: ) I live north side of Bolton so we do have some hills.
What would you advise? 1x 2x 3x? I'm looking for a balance of value to quality and reliable. It will never be used to seriously, sadly those days are gone!
I'll also I'll need a cheap set of wheels!? Any cheap sets that jump out as being reasonable?
Cheers
Simon

There is a lot of high quality 2x components out there that have been displaced by everyone going 1x. (I'm one of them). So if you don't mind getting slightly used great kit for not much money look for 2x kit.
Seriously, I have a load of 2x kit that was on two of my bikes before I switched to 1x. Never got around to eBaying it.0 -
What exactly do you need? Literally everything, cranks, brakes, or just mech, cassette and so on?Daddy, Husband, Designer, Biker, Gamer, Geek

Yep, I need everything. My concern about going used is lack of reliability."I Like Boring Things", Andy Warhol0

For your intended use I'd go 2x10.
Something like a 36/22 or 38/24 chain set with a 11-34 or 11-36 cassette will give you low gears for off-road climbs but you'll still have decent higher gears for road blasts.
Shimano Deore or SLX would be my choice.“Life has been unfaithful
