Hi All
I'm looking to get my first pair of SPD-L's, i used to use SPD's years ago (even on road bike) and found them OK. (M540)I now want a pair of SPD-L's for road only plus a new pair of lightish shoes if possible in a Wide format?
It looks like the Shimano PD-R540 are common and cheap, there are sets on Ebay with yellow cleats (6 deg), would these suffice? I presume they are not adjustable due to the coloured cleats red-0, blue-2, Yellow-6 deg??
Or should i get something different??
Also what shoes are good value/weight if thats possible, also in a W fit (or is this not needed as most are adjustable).
If i wear Timberland boots the standard 8's will not fit me at all, i need an 8W...
Cheers

Timberland boots will not work with SPD-SL pedals...not without some modification, anyway...0

Bonts are pretty good for wide feet.0

Plus one for Bonts - I have wide, flat feet and wear Bont Riots - they can also be heat moulded to suit your footWilier Izoard XP0

Bont's all the way. Obviously shoe fit is very individual but I've got feel like paddles and I used to use Shimano Wide fit but even they were too tight. After 30-40 miles they felt like bear traps.
I'm using Bont Vaypor's now and even after 100miles/150miles, I get no issues.Giant TCR

I think he was referring to Timberland boots and the fact that a standard 8 won't fit, he needs an 8W and if anyone else happened to wear an 8W in said boots could they offer up any recommendations.Advocate of disc brakes.0 -
Timberland boots with an SL cleat - that I would love to see.0

Diadora cycling shoes come up a bit wider than most.0

Shimano does wide fit. The shoes I have are SH-R088LE (wide fit). I'd suggest trying on a normal width pair of shoes to be certain of the general size, then ordering the wider version.
The ones I have are black but if you don't mind white there are some here. https://www.bikester.co.uk/shimano-sh-rp3w-shoe-white-463596.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwvo_qBRDQARIsAE-bsH_OaUqgz4oLWhVwCC7CU20d48IKT6_sJmVar9Vx8zg1-5k_s2upB38aAstlEALw_wcB&_cid=21_1_-1_%7Bifpla:9%7D%7Bifpe:8%7D_34_463596_%7Bcreative%7D_%7Bifpla:pla%7D&ef_id=Cj0KCQjwvo_qBRDQARIsAE-bsH_OaUqgz4oLWhVwCC7CU20d48IKT6_sJmVar9Vx8zg1-5k_s2upB38aAstlEALw_wcB&ev_chn=shop0 -

shimano or Lake. cx237's are really good shoes for broad feet. or my broad feet.0

philbar has it right. Shimano wide versions are ok, Lake are excellent. Most natural leather shoes will stretch and shape a little, like Bont, so they are not a bad option.
Get the blue cleats, yellow wobblies defeat purpose a bit IMO, unless you already have shot up knees0 -

blue cleats as well yes, having said that the lifeline ones (red coloured bodies with grey tips) are 4.5% and cheaper than Shimanos. yellow ones flap around too much.0
