Edge 1030 for 2nd bike

Hi

This may be obvious - but I've looked and can't work out if this is a thing [and Garmin seem to have no contact email]

I have a MTB with a 1030 edge set up on it

If I buy a road bike, is there a package I can buy - that repeats all the sensors/stuff - so I can have only one Edge 1030 and be able to attach it to either bike [as they both have all the sensors on them]

Is that 'second' set of accessories [everything but the computer] something that you can buy

As many of you may have a second bike - is this a common thing - if so can anyone point me towards a listing to buy the 'bits' - ideally from a UK / england supplier

Thanks for any help/abuse

Best wishes

    What sensors do you want?
You do not need any sensors for the 1030 to work, just a second mount.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

The way the 1030 and other recent Garmins work is you just connect and store the sensor details on the computer, up to 20 sensors can be stored DCRainmaker reckons. Whichever bike you use you only need to select the profile and the computer detects the active sensors being used from those stored.

So for your new bike you can use whatever brand of sensors you want, you don't need Garmin's own and you can mix and match. So you could use a current heart rate strap and fit alternative/cheaper bar mount and cadence/speed sensors to the road bike if you wish.

I imagine Garmin does do a complete second set but it won't be cheap and may duplicate sensors you might already have, like the heart rate strap.

I guess I only need the cadence/speed sensor

As the heart one works off the strap anyway

I think they do them for around £60

I didn't know that this would cover me for everything from the 1030 bundle

Sorry I'm a bit new to all of this

    Thanks

The bundle adds a heart rate monitor, speed sensor, and cadence sensor to the Edge device. For a second bike you just need appropriate speed and cadence sensors as the HR monitor is attached to you, not the bike. A second mount for the Edge device is also required.

Do you really need your cadence sensor? I'd not bother with it.

Yeah I like the cadence sensor

But then I usually push and look at the numbers as I ride...

Decathlon do a similar pair of sensors for £35. Others who use these dual sensors might be able to advise of alternatives as I still use the older combined type sensor on two bikes which are still good and can be had even cheaper.

On my road bike I let the powermeter provide cadence and GPS provide speed.

Sounds to me like you only need a cadence sensor and mount.
The 1030 does speed using gps.

I was under the impression the GPS speed wasn't very reliable

From [since this thread] knowing what to look for - it looks like £40 for one sensor, or £60 for both

And as you get more than one mount with the 1030 bundle - I guess I don't need a new mount...

There isn't anything else that I would need [that I have missed?]... As obviously the computer and heart rate band are the same for both bikes

I've not used a speed sensor for years.
Get one of these and save yourself £30.

I bought a Magene sensor from ALiExpress for under a tenner, only downside is it took several weeks to arrive but I was in no hurry for it I just didn't want to pay Garmin prices for another sensor.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

In places where the sky is obstructed (under trees, surrounded by tall buildings, tunnels) then the speed/distance generated by the GPS can/will be unreliable. A speed sensor (provided the wheel size is correct) will provide you with an accurate speed/distance reading at all times whatever the satellite visibility is.

I use one to remove any possibility of GPS speed errors.
