Chain catching intermittently on front derailleur

Good morning all,

I have a Cannondale SuperSix Evo which has ridden about 650 Mikee and is a year old. The chain is catching intermittently on the front chain catch as seen in this video;

https://youtu.be/z59zq57ictY

I’ve not crashed it or dropped it at all, and it was set up by Paul’s Cycles who I’ve brought several bikes from before without issues.

It only does it whilst in the big ring at the front and the top 3-4 at the back. No issues at all in the small ring at the front. Gears indexed and adjusted correctly.

Any idea what could be causing this at all? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

    Bent chain ring or loose chain ring bolt? Although some Cannondale chainsets are one-piece I think?

    looks like it's always the same tooth - mark it and check - then check the tooth - could've been knocked or something and have a slight burr on it...
    Of course, that happens when back pedaling - if it's ok going forwards - does it matter?

    I just watched the video. It doesn't happen with every revolution of the chain ring... so it is probably chain-related.

    Stiff link?

    Thank you for the replies. I think it was a loose chain pin. I’ve properly tightened it now and it’s better, only catching very occasionally. I’ll take it in to the LBS for a look, it’s due a service anyway. Thanks again.

    If you've just pushed a loose chain pin back in, the chain could be liable to snap whilst riding. The pins are "mushroomed" at the ends to stop them from coming loose. Have a close look at the offending link. If its a Shimano chain, it might be the joining pin (looks slightly different to the other pins) wasn't pushed in far enough when installing the chain.

    Don't think it is a loose pin as it happens more than one full crank revolution. If it was a pin it is more than 2x full revs (chain length ~112 links / Big ring teeth 50-52).

    Looking at it full screen and at 0.25 speed you can see on the first 'catch' that the tooth has a bright bit on the tip. Looks like it might have taken a knock and bent it slightly causing the catch. Rub your fingertips over the tooth to see if it has a rough outer edge. Chain looks very clean. Is it lubed enough?

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.
