Tiagra v Sora

Don't know, but if MF comes along saying it inferior groupset, just ignore him0

Your rear mech doesn't know what speed it is. It just moves along as the cable pull tells it. Mixing and matching is fairly common and nothing to worry about.0

nah - tiagra & sora are what they are - solid, bombproof, no hype, work well, no hyperbole, well priced. do a job and do it well.
but as above - its just a mech that does what the shifters tell it to do.

Could also simply be an old stock 9 speed Tiagra rear derailleur.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

Tiagra 4400/4500 was 9 speed so it may be an older RD but saying that a 10speed RD will work fine with 9speed shifters and vice versa. I ran Tiagra 4600 10spd shifters with a 4500 RD and it worked perfectly.0

But note that the current 10 speed 4700 Tiagra with the under bar tape cable routing has a different cable pull, so the shifters and mech won't play nicely with older 10 speed stuff, or indeed 8 and 9 speed.
It is compatible with the dearer, newer 11 speed groupsets above it though0 -
I've gone through umpteen Tiagra shifters due to cable snaps.0
