My daughter wants a road bike - she's looking at getting fitter for football but her attempts at running have been hampered by plantar fascitis and as she used to race cross and do some track as a kid (it was the track focus locally in youth cycling put her off she didn't enjoy it) she thought cycling might be better.

I thought I'd look second hand, anyone her height can tell me what bike you ride so I have a ball park idea what size I'm looking for? She's normal female proportions in terms of leg/torso.

I won't be buying blind but I don't want to drive out somewhere to fund say a 54cm cervelo is obviously too big or a 50cm trek is for someone about 5'2 .

Thanks

I'm a 5'6" bloke but with the longer legs / shorter torso oft cited in women's bike sizing. I'd normally be looking at 51/52 cm frames.

Hi, Same size as me. The standard sizing would be a 50cm. But smaller is not an issue as you change the stem and spacers to suit your preferred drop and reach.

OK thanks with the usual caveat that manufacturers size things differently that's narrowed it down nicely - I would have had no idea if a 54 was possible but it sounds like 52 is top end worth considering. Id take her to sit on it and I'd be confident in judging whether it fitted or not - it's just to minimise the chance of a wasted journey.

It's a shame I sold her old bike - I built her up a specialised tricross to race on aged about 12 just about the time she packed up (typically) but I can't remember if it was a 49 or a 46 which they seem to have made at some point. I'd be confident she needed a size bigger now.

Couldnt you get her down to the local shop and sit on a few? Then you'd know what would work.

Yes I'm just too honest though I'd feel bad knowing that I had no intention of buying her a new bike. The bike shop I used to actually spend money in and that I have bought the odd bike from has shut - if I need any work doing beyond what I can be bothered with I tend to use one of these small outfits that do repairs and sell bits and bobs now.

One of my daughters is 172cm - 5’ 7.5”, and she raced on a 50cm Dogma (with a 120mm stem) for a season, then two seasons on a Madone and an Emonda both, 52cm H1 fit. She’s currently riding a 51cm Cervelo R5, with a 110mm stem.

Look for something with an effective top tube in the range 52.5 - 53.5cm.

Hi. My wife has two Specialized Amiras. She’s 5ft 7in and both are 54cm women specific frames. The fit is v good. Bought one from the Specialized Concept store in Newbury and they commented on how well it fits her.
Nice bikes - v comfortable but races too. Now superceded by the Tarmac which has a unisex frame with male/ female specific components.
We’re looking at upgrading one of the bikes shortly and will probably follow the Tarmac route as fit seems similar.

Yes I know what you mean, on the other hand they may well have a last year or year before model they’re keen to shift. By the time you’ve put new pads and cables and tape etc on a secondhand bike you might not be too far off second hand price.

This is the disastrous thinking that led me to unplanned bike buying for my youngest two......

    I've got a Planet X RT-80 with a 52 top tube that'd fit I'm looking to sell.
I'm 5ft7 too so pretty sure it'd be ok.
    In Derby if you're interested.
    Cheers
