The Vast majority of which are concentrated in the South East. Even then it’s generally property based and if the downsized to something you deem more appropriate it will take a sizeable chunk of their property value (assuming they’re allowed to live somewhere). They’d also then be competing for the first time buyer / new family market. You’d find it even more unfair if you were getting gazumped on a house you want by some downsizing Boomer with cash burning a hole in their pocket.

One day people will work out that most inheritances are received *near or when you are already retired* unless you plan to really f@ck up the NHS

Who said anything about relying on it? It just makes sense if the money is within the family that you pass it to the generation that needs it most. Or you could blow it all on care but weren’t you also recently complaining about how much your family has lost from that too?
Let’s face it, what you’re suffering from is good old-fashioned jealousy. It happens to everyone so it’s best to just admit to it. As one of the first generation to miss out on DB pensions and who have to work longer than the traditional 65 I’m certainly jealous when I see people retiring in their late 50s / early 60s and I was paying into a pension scheme at 16.

Nah it’s worse than jealousy. I’ve seen that cohort gut state services to service their own pensions.
ive seen them hand themselves tax breaks instead of investing the windfall from oil and gas.
ive seen them throttle the housing market so that the only way 80% of current under 30s will ever afford their own home is family help.
They’ve polluted and burned fossil fuels at a rate that will forever hurt future generations and have created their own existential threat.
its not jealousy. It’s clarity in how they have chosen to run the country.

Well said. At the risk of kicking off another RC hobby horse, nobody said anything about relying on inheritance, but it's a nice bonus if you do get it. Helping your kids or grand kids (or whoever you want to help) sure beats a donation to the state, but Rick you are free to arrange your affairs in such a way that maximises what you pay in tax (IHT or other taxes) at the expense of your kids. I'm sure they will understand and thank you for that.

i wouldn’t worry lads, I’m sure when you lot all need care homes they’ll whack up the tax on earned income to pay for it because that generation didn’t think to vote for policies that invested in the future for this entirely foreseeable problem

To be fair, I should be able to afford decent care if it's needed - at the same time reducing the burden on the state. How you manage to fund yours is of course your problem...

I’ll argue it. You appear to be blaming an entire generation for Government policy. Now you can make the argument that Boomers voted for those Governments (even though the reality is that it was probably a small majority of them and, in areas like mine, a minority) but younger voters have to take a share of the blame for not making themselves important enough to politicians that they start delivering policies to attract their votes.
If everyone younger than Boomers punished the Government of the day at the ballot box they would be seen as more relevant but they are less likely to bother voting than the oldies. They need to take responsibility, if none of the established Parties speak for them then get themselves organised and start campaigning on the issues that matter to them.

I’m not taking it personally, I sit smack in the middle of Gen X (even though I think that whole system is a heap of shit). Like most people I also care about the legacy for my own kids and their kids. You’re looking at the impact of policies with (your) hindsight, older people would have voted and what seemed right for them at the time. If only we could come back in 30 years and see how your generation are viewed for how your decisions impacted on them.
Younger people whinging about their elders screwing them over and older people whinging about how easy it is for the youngsters has been one of the rare constants over centuries I suspect.
