MrsHD has sounded out a short stay in York over the bank holiday weekend at the end of May and mentioned riding there.

She's a novice and would prefer something flat and quiet over hilly and busy if such a thing exists, any thoughts on the area in general rather than specific routes?

It’s flat and the infrastructure is good, off road and segregated paths, advance start lights to get you away before the traffic. The odd closed railway line has been turned in to a cycle path (e.g. towards Selby). As far as I have seen it’s one of the more cycling friendly cities in The UK.

York itself is flat - all around it is also nominally flat, but the Yorkshire Wolds get a little lumpy in places. Nothing too demanding.

Pretty flat in all directions in the immediate vicinity of York, and attractively rural.

Stray too far North and you'll hit the N Yorks moors, and to the East you have the Wolds. Prettier in those directions though. Head South and it's relentlessly flat, but possibly less scenic.

Thanks all, I've just done a quick route on strava up to Malton for lunch and 66km gets you around 500m of climbing so nothing too strenuous.

Quiet lanes out towards Malton and some nice pubs. Thornton le Dale is a few flat miles further on.

It’s hard to get to Thornton le Dale without some time on a busy A road.

Road to Thornton le Dale from Malton not bad. Lots of lanes around Kirkby Misperton around there.
Flattish from York is easy though!
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D

On the off chance anyone happens to ride that and sees an outdoor research helium bivvy in a little stuff sac lying on the floor then feel free to either steal it or get in touch. I lost it on my epic Scotland to Hull ride in March, I'm sort of glad I don't have to ever sleep in it again, but also slightly annoying it cost me so much money...

Back on topic, I found it very pleasant and easy to get around York and down to Selby direction even in my 280km delirious state.

Actually the road from Malton is very busy and I might ride it on my own but even with two of you traffic will start get build up behind you. As for lots of lanes round Kirby Misperton you can get to Great Barugh or Great Habton or Ryton but some of lanes would make cobbles seem smooth. You can get a 30 mile or so circuit out of these lanes but you still have to ride busy roads to join them up.

This is a nice flat route beginning and ending at York hospital. It's not at all taxing and uses very quiet roads except where it crosses the A19 but that's ony a couple of hunred metres. Some interesting things to see on the way and you could include a small detour into Sheriff Hutton to see the ruins of Richard III's castle.
