Computers

Hi, up to now I’ve stuck to the basic cat eye cycle computers as I’m a real technofobe . I even have to get the missus to program them in for me.
However, I feel I need something with a bigger screen that does the basic stuff, I’m not bothered about Bluetooth etc.
Any suggestions would be appreciated?

wahoo bolt will do absolutely everything you'll ever need. can probably pick up pretty cheap now second hand too.
miles easier interface than garmins if you struggle with that kind of thing, worldwide maps, long battery. should tick all the boxes. those cateye things are a nightmare to set up.
nb you do need a smartphone to set up a wahoo.0 -

Tbh the 500 was a great gps but is old and no longer supported by Garmin. These were available from aldi brand new last year for £79 so I would say £50 for a used one, especially if it's been well used (even if looked after), is too much.
Given what you're looking for you don't really need an expensive gps computer. Why not just use a smart phone and an app?
If you do want a computer to sit on your bars though look for something like this

Just bung Strava on your smartphone in your back pocket. No cost.0

For a big screen, you don't want the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt or Garmin 820. As a minimum I'd say the Wahoo ELEMNT, but really, the Garmin 1000 or 1030 is your best bet.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -

pros/cons of this review seem to say that the garmin 1000 is exactly what he doesn't want.

we'd hazard a guess the 1030 is more of the same.
as above - strava in back pocket or simple speedo thing.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

+1, So simple to use and if it is in your pocket / saddle bag as previous poster suggests it is not distracting your attention from the road0 -

Given the fact that with the Bolt you can zoom in, makes bigger screen unnecessary0 -
Garmin Edge 800: Getting a bit old now, but you can pick one up for around £60. You don't need the maps or other bells and whistles, Just the front page with whatever you want on it and away you go.0

Do you want your stats on live (i.e. as you're riding)?
How are you comfortable with smartphones and apps?
If you simply want basic stats (i.e. average / max speed, total / max elevation, total distance) at the end of the ride and if you're okay with a smartphone app, then as others have suggested, Strava is more than enough for it.
Whereas, if you want live feedback on your speed, cadence, etc., then you'd need on-board computer such as Wahoo / Garmin as others have also suggested.

I've got a Giant Neostrack from Ribble Cycles for £109, which is the equivalent to a Garmin 520 roughly. The 520 and the Wahoo are all over £200 are they not?
I'm really pleased with it so far, apart from the initial set up which you have to do on the unit itself with the 5 buttons. It takes quite a while to input your height weight birth date and your bike details this way, the Wahoo app was seeming really appealing at this point! Once you have this done though, you don't need to do it again so it is a one off pain in the ass.
The unit does everything else really well, what clinched it for me apart from the price was the 33 hours battery life time. I haven't got that far yet, but if you ever think of an Everesting a unit that won't want recharging is worth having.
The reviews say the navigation isn't great, but I have used (or tried to use  ) Garmin's breadcrumb nav in the past, and that is impossible. The Giant nav can be a little quirky, and I have had to double back some times to get on the right course, but apart from that it has worked really well. The doubling back can be down to how you plot (and check the route at the planning stage) but once you know this you can work round it.
Having said all that, I think all these units are probably a level or two beyond what the OP is asking for.0 -
Edge 500
Edge 200
Edge 25
I'm sure will do everything the OP needs admirably, and cheaply.0 -

nothing wrong with that - we all know the MFs are technophobes but they have smart phones and have had iPhones -basically because they were given to them.
doesn't mean they know how to use them
