First road bike - Observations and musings

Twenty nine days since my last ride out. Been having a flare up of an old knee injury through the start and middle of this month. Think I will lay off football for a while. Went out on a very gentle 7mile ride last night, and was very pleased to report all well.
Last night was the hottest its been all summer and baby gt8374uh9jiodpo could only manage a broken 5 or so hours of sleep. Regardless my alarm was set for 5:30 this morning (baby and Mrs gt8374uh9jiodpo now fast asleep) and I was never going to cancel this planned ride. So after only one snooze I got up and headed out on my favourite 30mile route by just gone 6. Absolute bliss. Apart from the high pollen count and distinct backward step in fitness. 15 minutes slower than last time, but not too shabby given the length of time I had been absent from cardio.
Will look at doing around 40 miles next weekend, as the long term goal is a 100mile sportive next year and so I need to keep the miles gradually increasing. But more about that another day.0 -
I quite enjoyed reading this thread. It took me back to when I picked up a road bike. I remember doing 40 miles, stumbling into a petrol station and necking a bottle of Lucozade and a Mars bar thinking I was about to pass out!
Just keep chipping away. Over time your miles will increase, your speed will go up, your kit will get better etc. Once you feel confident enough, I think that looking for a local cycling club will be a great for you. It doesn't have to be anything serious, maybe just a local pub club that go out a couple of times a week.
Keep an eye out on Strava or facebook for meetups etc. There are loads of beginners groups that will get you connected with like-minded cyclists. Before you know it you will be off to Mallorca on a Cycling weekend!Giant TCR
