Garmin Edge 1000 and Segments

I've just got a 1000 and have been playing about with it especially using segments. I've found that while navigating the segment start / end / stats are not displayed, all that's visible on the map is a dot at the start and end and a green line connecting the two. While not using navigation I get advanced warning of approaching segments the start and finish and stats. Is this normal? I'm using v15.0.

    Thanks for the informative answer. I've looked through the manual, found nothing on this. What page are you referring to?
